Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Is a 7-qt single basket important enough to accept one cooking area and a 1700 W draw?
The manual specifies one 7-qt HF-196DT basket at 1700 W; it does not document independent baskets or synchronized finish.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require a documented 120 V / 60 Hz supply and a 400°F upper setting?
The model-specific specification table lists 120 V / 60 Hz, 1700 W and an 180–400°F adjustment range.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a named Dehydrate cooking mode essential?
The manual lists this model’s preset set and does not document a Dehydrate mode; its minimum temperature is 180°F.
Explore this need in the finder →Must the outer basket itself be dishwasher-safe?
The FAQ names only the Fry Tray as dishwasher-safe; the cleaning guidance calls for hand-washing the basket.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need two independent cooking zones with synchronized finish?
The manual describes one pull-out basket and one control area; it does not document independent zones or sync finish.
Explore this need in the finder →The Emeril Lagasse AirFryer HF-196DT is the seven-quart, 1,700-watt configuration at the top of the maker’s 4-, 5-, and 7-quart HF-family table. It remains a single pull-out basket with one control panel; the larger capacity does not turn it into a two-zone appliance or countertop oven. The exact model-specific page in the manual labels HF-196DT as 7 qt., which is more useful than the broader “4-7QT” shorthand in one index row.

The largest basket is still one cooking area
The specification table and labeled illustration agree on a seven-quart basket. A separate family chart gives 28 ounces of French fries as an example for the 7-quart size, compared with 22 ounces for the 5-quart HF-8959DT and 16 ounces for the 4-quart HF-509DT. Treat these as maker-provided food-specific starting amounts, not portions for every recipe or a guarantee that a full basket cooks evenly without checking.
HF-196DT has one outer basket and a removable Fry Tray. There is no second basket to start another food at a separate time, no independent cooking zone, and no synchronized-finish function in the manual. A large single batch may be useful when you want one food in one compartment; it will not solve a need to cook different items at once with separate settings.
Seven named presets, with a manual temperature range
The seven-quart chart lists French Fry, Roast, Bake, Fish, Shrimp, Chicken, and Steak. Roast, Bake, and Shrimp are also on the five-quart HF-8959DT, but not the four-quart HF-509DT. HF-196DT’s default start is 370°F for 15 minutes; the manual lists 180–400°F and a zero-to-60-minute timer, with one-degree-of-time-minute and ten-degree temperature adjustments. It does not list a Dehydrate mode or a lower drying temperature.
The manual’s model-specific display illustration shows the preset symbols and an M control; the written section describes choosing among cooking presets. Read the seven-quart page rather than assuming that controls shown for another Emeril fryer family are identical. The instructions describe a user-set three-minute preheat and a pause-and-shake routine. They do not describe automatic dual-zone timing or a window for watching food cook.
Power and cleanup remain single-basket tradeoffs
The maker rates this configuration at 1,700 W on 120 V/60 Hz. Its instructions call for a dedicated wall outlet and say not to use an extension cord. No verified exterior dimensions or weight appear in the inspected pages, so a seven-quart label alone is not enough to plan a tight counter space. The page-7 manufacturer image labels this model, but does not document its actual finish or measure its footprint.
The cleaning FAQ names only the Fry Tray as dishwasher-safe and the manual describes a nonstick surface without identifying its coating chemistry or PFAS status. Plan to hand-wash the outer basket. If a dishwasher-safe outer basket, a transparent viewing window, a named Dehydrate setting, or two independent drawers is essential, the HF-196DT does not have those documented features.
Resolve the exact HF-196DT reference before shopping
The manual index includes a broad row labeled “4-7QT” for HF-196DT, but the index links to the same family booklet whose page-7 table specifies HF-196DT as 7 qt. and 1,700 W; the page-7 illustration also labels it 7 qt. This is a case where the model-specific specification resolves an imprecise family label. Do not reinterpret it as a variable-capacity appliance.
The PowerXL Classic manual also names HF-196DT and gives the same model capacity and electrical rating. The Emeril and PowerXL manuals use different branding and warranty wording; the shared model code alone does not establish identical seller packages, support terms, or interchangeable parts. Read the unit’s label. The current Emeril HF collection page saved for this check shows an accessory rather than a base fryer offer, so present availability and discontinuation remain unknown. This is an owner/reference guide, not a current buying recommendation. If you need a new model, compare currently listed exact-unit options against your counter space, outlet, cleaning needs, and whether one large basket actually fits your cooking routine.
