Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Would one digital 4-quart basket and its four documented presets cover your typical batch?
The manual lists one 4-qt basket and four named presets. Its 16 oz fries entry is a food-specific guide, not a general servings claim.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require a documented 120 V / 60 Hz supply and a 400°F upper setting?
The model-specific specification table lists 120 V / 60 Hz, 1200 W and an 180–400°F adjustment range.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a named Dehydrate cooking mode essential?
The manual lists this model’s preset set and does not document a Dehydrate mode; its minimum temperature is 180°F.
Explore this need in the finder →Must the outer basket itself be dishwasher-safe?
The FAQ names only the Fry Tray as dishwasher-safe; the cleaning guidance calls for hand-washing the basket.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need two independent cooking zones with synchronized finish?
The manual describes one pull-out basket and one control area; it does not document independent zones or sync finish.
Explore this need in the finder →The Emeril Lagasse AirFryer HF-509DT is the four-quart digital basket configuration in the maker’s HF family. Its owner manual lists a 1,200-watt rating, 120 V/60 Hz supply, one pull-out basket with a separate Fry Tray, and four model-appropriate food presets. That makes it the smallest capacity in this documented 4-, 5-, and 7-quart group—not a compact oven, dual-basket fryer, or appliance with several independent cooking zones.

Four quarts is a basket label, not a serving count
The specification table gives the outer basket a four-quart capacity. A separate family chart suggests 16 ounces of French fries for the 4-quart model. That is useful as a starting example for one named food, but it is not a universal serving promise: ingredients vary in shape and thickness, and the manual does not convert that amount into a reliable number of portions. If you normally cook bulky or layered foods, do not treat the printed basket volume as equivalent to a flat usable surface.
The layout is a single drawer-like basket and a removable Fry Tray inside it. The tray raises food above the bottom of the basket, but it is not another basket or a second independently timed level. You can pause a batch to shake it, yet the appliance has no second cooking zone or synchronized finish. Choose it only if one batch and one control area are enough.
Read the preset chart by model, not by family headline
The Emeril manual lists French Fry, Fish, Chicken, and Steak for HF-509DT. It assigns a 25-minute Chicken preset to this smaller model; the larger 5- and 7-quart versions add Roast, Bake, and Shrimp. The default start is 370°F for 15 minutes, with temperature adjustments from 180°F to 400°F and a 0–60-minute timer. Those ranges provide room for manual time-and-temperature choices, but the manual does not document a Dehydrate mode or a low-temperature drying range.
The HF-509DT control-panel illustration includes preset symbols and an M control. The manual text says to select cooking presets, while a separate PowerXL-branded manual for the same printed model code describes its M button explicitly. Because the two booklets use brand-specific wording, check the exact logo and model label rather than assuming every seller photo, control explanation, or included part applies to an Emeril-branded unit.
Cleaning and power are practical limits
The manual describes a nonstick surface but does not identify its chemistry or make a PFAS-free claim. Its FAQ names only the Fry Tray as dishwasher-safe; the basket itself needs hand cleaning. For an owner who specifically wants the whole basket to go in a dishwasher, that is a clear mismatch rather than a missing detail.
At 1,200 W on 120 V/60 Hz, it is a U.S.-electrical configuration. The instructions call for a dedicated outlet and say not to use an extension cord. The manual does not provide a verified outside footprint or weight in the pages reviewed, so measure your counter and confirm the rating plate before planning a tight installation. A separate three-minute user-set preheat is described; it is not a second cooking mode.
Keep the exact brand identity straight
HF-509DT also appears in a PowerXL Classic manual with the same listed capacity and electrical rating. The Emeril manual describes a 60-day money-back period and one-year replacement guarantee, while the PowerXL booklet carries different historical guarantee language. Those are brand-specific manual statements, not current seller promises, and the matching code alone does not verify a retail package or present warranty. For replacement parts or an existing machine, read the nameplate and follow the manual for that brand.
The current Emeril HF-series page inspected for this review shows a fry-plate accessory compatible with HF-509DT, not a base fryer offer. That does not establish whether a retailer has old stock, whether it is out of stock, or whether the model has been discontinued. This page is therefore useful for identification and comparison, not a current purchase recommendation. If you need a new fryer now, compare currently listed single-basket options whose exact model, care instructions, and seller package are all verified. If the four-quart size appeals but you want more preset choices, the documented HF-8959DT and HF-196DT provide five- and seven-quart alternatives; they remain manual references here as well.
