Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you want the middle HF size, with Roast, Bake and Shrimp added to the shared preset group?
The manual assigns 5 qt, 1500 W and seven presets to HF-8959DT; the smaller 4-qt version omits three of those presets.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require a documented 120 V / 60 Hz supply and a 400°F upper setting?
The model-specific specification table lists 120 V / 60 Hz, 1500 W and an 180–400°F adjustment range.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a named Dehydrate cooking mode essential?
The manual lists this model’s preset set and does not document a Dehydrate mode; its minimum temperature is 180°F.
Explore this need in the finder →Must the outer basket itself be dishwasher-safe?
The FAQ names only the Fry Tray as dishwasher-safe; the cleaning guidance calls for hand-washing the basket.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need two independent cooking zones with synchronized finish?
The manual describes one pull-out basket and one control area; it does not document independent zones or sync finish.
Explore this need in the finder →The Emeril Lagasse AirFryer HF-8959DT is the middle member of the manufacturer’s HF basket family: a single 5-quart drawer, digital controls, a separate internal Fry Tray, and a 1,500-watt rating. Its owner manual gives it the larger model’s seven-preset set, while the smaller HF-509DT has four. That makes this model a useful comparison point when the 4-quart basket looks limiting but a 7-quart drawer is not the obvious choice.

The capacity change is real, but not a serving guarantee
The specification table labels the outer basket as five quarts. The family chart separately lists 22 ounces of French fries for this model, compared with 16 ounces for the four-quart HF-509DT and 28 ounces for the seven-quart HF-196DT. These are food-specific guide amounts, not equivalent serving counts and not proof that every shape of food can be spread in a single layer. A tall pile may behave differently from smaller pieces arranged with room for air to circulate.
There is still only one cooking area. The pull-out basket and the Fry Tray inside it make a single batch; neither is a separately controlled compartment. The manual describes removing the basket to shake food and then returning it, not cooking two dishes to finish together. If you depend on two independent zones, keep looking even if five quarts sounds roomy.
Seven presets distinguish it from the four-quart version
HF-8959DT’s charted presets are French Fry, Roast, Bake, Fish, Shrimp, Chicken, and Steak. Roast, Bake, and Shrimp are the three additions the manual reserves for the 5- and 7-quart models. The default setting is 370°F for 15 minutes; the adjustable range is 180–400°F, and the timer spans zero to 60 minutes. The manual says the buttons move temperature in 10-degree steps and time in one-minute steps. Its low end is not a substitute for a dedicated dehydration mode.
The page-8 panel diagram identifies HF-8959DT and shows preset symbols and an M control. The manual text discusses choosing presets; it does not promise that each food icon is a measured recipe result. Use the chart as a starting point and inspect food as needed. The booklet also describes a three-minute user-set preheat, rather than an automatic second-stage cooking program.
One-basket care and electrical planning
The manual rates this variant at 1,500 W on 120 V/60 Hz. It advises a dedicated outlet and says not to use an extension cord. That is worth considering alongside the footprint: the pages checked do not provide a verified exterior width, depth, or weight. Do not assume the five-quart capacity tells you how much counter space or clearance it needs; check the actual unit and its label before choosing a location.
The manual describes the basket and Fry Tray as having a nonstick surface, but does not identify its chemistry or claim PFAS-free contact surfaces. Its FAQ names only the Fry Tray as dishwasher-safe, and its cleaning section directs hand washing. If your essential requirement is a dishwasher-safe outer basket, HF-8959DT does not meet it.
Why brand and model label matter
The same HF-8959DT code is also listed in a PowerXL Classic manual with the same capacity and electrical rating. The Emeril booklet’s panel drawing includes an M control, and the PowerXL manual describes preset selection with an M button; however, the brand-specific booklets use different names and historical guarantee language. Emeril’s copy describes a 60-day money-back period and one-year replacement guarantee, not a guarantee that can be assumed for a current resale listing. Verify the maker’s logo and nameplate before applying advice or ordering a part.
The current Emeril HF-series collection snapshot contains a fry-plate accessory rather than an HF-8959DT base-unit card. That is a bounded manufacturer-page observation, not a stock check or a discontinuation claim. The model is documented well enough to help an owner identify the correct manual and capacity, but this page does not present it as a current item to buy. For a current purchase, choose an exact model with a verified base listing and care details. Within the Emeril manual family, the four-quart HF-509DT is smaller and has fewer presets; HF-196DT is seven quarts but still uses one basket and one cooking area.
