A useful fit for

A single-drawer routine that benefits from a 6.5-qt nominal basket and Ninja's fixed 450°F Max Crisp mode, with the choice of black AF181 or Stone Gold AF181SD.

The main tradeoff

There is only one cooking zone, so the basket cannot independently time a second food. Physical/electrical values listed on the black AF181 page are not repeated for AF181SD and are left variant-specific; a PFAS-free claim is not stated.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Would one larger 6.5-quart basket for one cooking program at a time fit your routine?

Both exact codes, AF181 Black and AF181SD Stone Gold, are listed as one 6.5-qt basket and one cooking zone.

Would Ninja's fixed-temperature Max Crisp mode be useful?

Max Crisp is a named button on the AF181 and AF181SD product pages; the AF181 guide says its temperature is not adjustable.

Would dishwasher-safe parts fit your cleanup routine, or do you also need a second cooking zone?

Both exact pages say the basket and plate are dishwasher-safe; this Pro XL still has only one cooking zone.

Is an explicit manufacturer PFAS-free statement for food-contact surfaces essential?

The AF181 and AF181SD pages do not give that statement; if it is essential, this configuration does not meet the documented requirement.

The Ninja Air Fryer Pro XL comes in two exact U.S. finishes in the evidence reviewed here: black AF181 and Stone Gold AF181SD. Both manufacturer pages describe a 6.5-quart single basket, a crisper plate, a six-function menu and Max Crisp at up to 450°F. The Stone Gold code is worth preserving when shopping, even though its listed operating package matches the black model. This is a larger one-zone drawer, not a dual-basket fryer.

One larger drawer, not two independent meals

The 6.5-quart nominal basket is a step up from the 5-quart AF141. Ninja gives food examples of up to five pounds of fries or nine pounds of wings for the AF181 family. These are maker-listed examples, not independent capacity tests or a promise that every food will fit in one layer. The product has one pull-out basket and one operating zone. Whatever is in the drawer shares the selected program, temperature and timer; there is no second basket with its own settings or synchronized finish feature.

That distinction matters more than the number of named modes if dinner routinely includes foods that need different treatment. A single drawer can cook a larger batch than a small fryer, but it cannot split the batch into two independently controlled loads. If you need two zones, compare a dual-basket design such as the Ninja DoubleStack range or a single divided-drawer model. The AF181 is the better match when the full basket can run one program and you prefer a straightforward digital panel.

Six buttons, one special high-temperature mode

The named functions are Max Crisp, Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Reheat and Dehydrate. The AF181 owner guide identifies Max Crisp as a fixed-temperature mode: the time can be changed, but its temperature cannot. The guide’s troubleshooting section says Max Crisp reaches 450°F and other functions top out at 400°F. That makes the 450°F label a mode-specific feature, not a general 450°F range across every function. It is a real distinction from the AF141, which lists four modes and reaches 400°F.

The guide recommends three minutes of preheating for best results and shows the user how to pause and shake food during a cook. The plate raises food to let air move underneath. These instructions are useful for planning a routine, but they are not performance test results. The exact AF181 menu does not list Air Broil, a probe, or connected app controls; a generic guide reference to an Air Broil temperature in troubleshooting should not be treated as a seventh mode for this six-button product.

Finish, fit and material questions

The Stone Gold AF181SD product page repeats the 6.5-quart basket, the same six functions, the Max Crisp 450°F description, the basket-and-plate package and a one-year limited warranty. It identifies the color as Stone Gold. The page does not repeat exterior dimensions, weight, wattage or voltage. SharkNinja’s black AF181 page lists 16.3 by 12.6 by 14.17 inches, 12.57 pounds, 120 volts and 1,750 watts; the black model’s guide states 120V~60Hz and 1,750W. Do not assume those unlisted electrical or fit details for the gold finish solely from its similar appearance.

Both exact product pages say the basket and crisper plate are nonstick and dishwasher-safe. The AF181 guide recommends hand-washing the basket to help extend its life. It also describes a ceramic-coated basket for the AF181. The AF181SD page does not name coating chemistry, and neither page supplies an explicit PFAS-free statement for all food-contact surfaces. If your purchase depends on the exact substrate, coating formula or a PFAS-free claim, these pages leave that requirement unanswered.

Who gets the most from the Pro XL?

Consider the AF181 or AF181SD if your routine calls for a single, larger drawer; you want to dehydrate, bake or reheat as well as air-fry; and Max Crisp’s fixed 450°F setting has a specific place in your cooking. It is less compelling for someone who wants separate programs at the same time, a hands-off probe finish, or a fully disclosed coating specification. Also check the counter measurement and drawer pull-out space. The black model’s published height is about 14 inches; the Stone Gold page does not state its own dimensions.

The AF141 is the simpler and smaller alternative: five quarts, four modes and a listed 400°F top. COSORI’s TurboBlaze KUS is another one-basket choice with a six-quart listing, nine functions and a 450°F maximum, plus an explicit PFAS-free ceramic-coating statement in its exact U.S. materials. Those differences can matter more than branding: the AF181’s distinguishing high mode is fixed-temperature Max Crisp, while the COSORI offers a broader function menu and a different surface disclosure. Neither is a two-zone appliance. For a concise side-by-side by capacity, controls, temperature and cleaning, see the Pro family comparison.
